West Virginia Wesleyan College alumni, Mari Stewart is currently enjoying a great year on and off the court in the U.K.
Her U.K. university side are currently undefeated, winning all 8 of their regular season games and sit top of the conference standings. In addition to this, Mari will be due to graduate with her Master’s of Research in Sport Science later this year.
In a recent blog, Mari shared her thoughts on her time in the U.K. to date along with her aspirations for the future where she mentioned “I really have enjoyed my time here(England) and would like to spend a year or more here learning and playing more basketball”.
With her ambitions of playing further basketball upon graduation, Mari has been using some of her free time outside of her studies and athletic commitments to make further connections within U.K. basketball.
WBBL Playing OpportunityThrough these connections, we were delighted to learn that Mari has recently had a successful trial and been offered a contract that will see her compete in the WBBL for the remainder of the season. The WBBL (Women’s British Basketball League) is made up of teams located throughout England, Scotland and Wales and is the highest level of women’s basketball in the United Kingdom. |
Mari took to the court for the first time last weekend, playing 18 minutes and contributing 5 points in her WBBL debut. Whilst her current U.K. university basketball season is far from over, her newest opportunity to will give herself the chance to test herself against some of the best players in the country and play a minimum of at least 10 further regular season games, with the potential for more in the post season.
With previous experience of playing in Kosovo, Sweden and Australia, Mari is no stranger to playing basketball overseas, though the opportunity to continue compete and return to school for a master’s degree came at the right time for Mari.
