Back-to-back National League Division 1 Team of the Week Honours for Play Overseas Athletes
Whilst it has been far from a normal season of sport in the U.K. we are pleased to see that many of our student-athletes have still been able to pursue their sporting ambitions during their first semester overseas.
During the absence of BUCS (the English version of the NCAA) many of our basketballers have continued to compete in the U.K. National Basketball League. At the Division 1 Level, it has been classed as ‘Elite Sport’ and has been permitted to continue throughout the lockdown.
In a ‘normal year’ many of our athletes would compete for both their U.K. university side a National League club, giving them the chance to play a lot of basketball during their year overseas whilst also working towards their masters degree.
Two players currently competing at this level are former Whitman College teammates, Makana Stone and Mady Burdett. Both Makana and Mady reached out to Play Overseas during their senior year with similar ambitions: to pursue a master’s degree and to play basketball overseas.
The two teammates had different academic ambitions which saw them get recruited to different U.K. universities. Whilst no longer competing for the same team, both Makana and Mady have been able to make significant contributions to their teams.
Their performances in recent weeks have seen both players earn a place on the U.K. National League Team of the Week.
18 Point, 25 rebound debut performance from Makana StoneAfter finishing as the #2 rebounder and #5 scorer in program history at Whitman College, Makana is now continuing her impressive career in England whilst pursuing her Master’s in Exercise Physiology. She recently earned Player of the Week honors with a dominant 18 point, 25 rebound debut performance. |

Mady Burdett continues strong start to the seasonFormer Whitman College guard, Mady scored over 1,000 points during her time at Whitman and has also made a great start to life in England. Whilst pursuing her masters in Education, Mady has made an immediate impact in the WNBL and recently earned Team of the Week honours when she scored 20 points, going 4-6 from beyond the arc. |
Congratulations on your recent success, Makana and Mady! We hope you enjoy your time in the U.K. and look forward to following your success throughout the rest of the season.
