Drew Nelson played for the Dominican University of California men’s golf team between 2013 – 2017. During this time the former team captain demonstrated excellence both on the course and in the classroom. Drew graduated with a 3.81 GPA as a business major and picked up a variety of awards during his years representing the Penguins.
In 2013-2014 Drew was named the PacWest Freshman of the year, in subsequent seasons Drew went on be named the PacWest Men’s Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year on three occasions as well as well as being named a two time Academic All-American.
After graduating from Dominican, Drew stayed in California as he secured a job in the financial services industry working as an analyst and staff accountant. A masters degree was always in Drew’s future plans, when speaking to us about this opportunity he said “Pursuing a master’s degree is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time; I just never knew where or when I wanted to study for it. Transitioning into the work world after graduating was almost a culture shock to me: for the first time in my life, I wasn’t playing golf 5-6 days a week while going to school, and it was totally foreign to me.”
Drew went on to add “I began looking into grad schools right around the 1 year mark at my job, I came across Play Overseas and discovered an amazing opportunity to get the Master’s degree I’ve always wanted, but also continue my passion for golf.”
Due to Drew’s previous performances for the Dominican men’s golf team as well as his strong academic track record we were able to generate him a number of opportunities across different parts of England. After careful consideration, Drew ultimately went on to accept an offer from Durham University where he will study towards a masters degree in Management, with a concentration in Finance whilst playing for their golf team.
Drew will be flying to England to begin his masters degree in September. We will be following his success throughout his year in England, be sure to check back for an update in the near future.
Play Overseas offers a free service to student-athletes, helping them to identify postgraduate playing opportunities across England. Drew commented “I thank Harry and everyone at Play Overseas for my opportunity to study and play golf for Durham University this coming Fall!”
