Over the coming weeks, athletes across America will fly across the Atlantic ready to start their year overseas. It is an exciting time of year for our students as they start grad school and get ready to compete for their new university in a new country.
With our network of universities across the United Kingdom, from the South coast up through to Scotland we are able to present our athletes with a wide range of opportunities, allowing them to pursue both a masters degree and their sporting career.
In the coming weeks, two of our students from opposite sides of America will meet in Nottingham, England.
Mary Cooper, a recent graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, led the Bobcat defence as a centre back. In her senior season Mary helped her side to 17 shutouts in 22 fixtures, resulting a very impressive 18-2-2 record with the season unfortunately ending in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Her impressive performances at the back resulted in a haul of awards at the end of season including: Mountain East Conference defensive player of the year, Mountain East Conference First Team, All-Atlantic Region First Team and All-American First Team.
On the West Coast, Elizabeth Cruz has graduated from University of California Merced. Elizabeth had a great career during her years in Merced, she was a three time All-Pac Conference Selection and graduated as UC Merced Women’s Soccer All-Time Assist Leader. In Elizabeth’s final season UC Merced they lost in the Conference Championship after finishing second in the regular season standings.
Both players received interest from universities across the U.K. and considered multiple options before making their final decision.
During the application process, both Mary and Elizabeth expressed similar career ambitions with the desire to work with athletes in either strength and condition or injury rehabilitation. As a result, both have decided to study towards a masters in Sport Science during their year in England. We expect both players to make an immediate impact when competing for Nottingham Trent University next season. We look forward to following their success over the upcoming season.
